French students at Mesquite High School will be able to communicate at a Novice High proficiency level at the end of year 1 and at an Intermediate Low proficiency level at the end of year 2 (according to the scale established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages - ACTFL).  This rating is a description of what a student can do with language in terms of speaking, writing, listening, cultural appropriateness and reading in real-world situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context. Topics in French 1 include  greetings, personal descriptions, school, food, leisure activities, family descriptions, clothing and shopping.  French 2 topics include personal descriptions, town descriptions, daily routines, health and body parts, problems, emotions, childhood stories and travel.

Each unit of study will require students to memorize vocabulary, learn and apply grammatical concepts and understand and synthesize cultural norms within the context of that unit.  Students will demonstrate their abilities to read, write, understand and speak French in each unit through performance projects and criterion-referenced exams.  Students will maintain a proficiency portfolio in the classroom with these projects and exams and will conference regularly with me to focus on skills which need further development.

I have been teaching French for 28 years - 25 of them in the Gilbert Public Schools.  I started in 1992 at Gilbert High School, then helped to open Mesquite High School.  I also now travel between Mesquite and Campo Verde High School.  I teach periods 1-3 at CVHS and then periods 6-7 at MHS.  This does make communication, make-up work and tutoring more of a challenge - but it is not impossible!  The best method of communication is email.  Please contact me at any time at  Voice mail messages also reach me via my email - at either campus.  You may call 480-545-3100 extension 6765 and/or 480-632-4750 extension 6060 at any time.
